Craft, Paper and Fabric Cutters Explained

Craft and fabric cutting covers some of the most common cutting tasks people deal with, whether trimming paper for a scrapbook, cutting fabric for sewing, or preparing card for packaging. This page looks at the main tools used in this area and how they differ from one another.

01

Craft knives

A craft knife, sometimes called a hobby knife, has a thin, replaceable blade held in a slim handle. It is designed for detailed, controlled cuts such as trimming paper, cutting stencils, or scoring card along a fold line. Because the blade is thin and often sharpened to a fine point, craft knives are well suited to intricate shapes but less suited to long, straight cuts across thick material.

Blades for craft knives are usually sold as disposable or snap off segments. A snap off blade lets the user break away a dulled section to expose a fresh edge without replacing the whole blade, which is convenient for frequent use.

02

Paper trimmers and guillotines

A paper trimmer uses a sliding or rotary blade that runs along a fixed ruler or track, with the paper held flat on a base plate. This design keeps the cut straight and the blade at a consistent angle, which is difficult to achieve by hand with a loose blade. Paper trimmers are common in offices, schools, and craft rooms where repeated straight cuts on paper or thin card are needed.

A guillotine cutter uses a hinged blade that swings down through a stack of paper, often with a clamp to hold the sheets in place first. This style is suited to cutting many sheets at once, such as trimming a stack of printed pages to the same size, and it generally produces a cleaner edge through thicker stacks than a sliding trimmer.

03

Rotary cutters for fabric

A rotary cutter looks similar in concept to a pizza cutter: a circular blade mounted on a handle that rolls across the material as it cuts. For fabric, this rolling action reduces the pulling and fraying that can happen when scissors drag through woven material, which makes it a popular choice in quilting and dressmaking.

Rotary cutters are almost always used together with a clear acrylic ruler and a self healing cutting mat. The ruler guides the blade along a straight or angled line, and the mat protects both the work surface and the blade edge. Rotary blades come in a range of diameters, with larger blades suited to cutting through several layers of fabric at once and smaller blades better for tight curves and detailed shapes.

04

Fabric shears and scissors

Dedicated fabric shears differ from ordinary household scissors mainly in blade length, blade angle, and the fineness of the cutting edge. A longer blade allows for longer, smoother cuts along a pattern line, while a finely ground edge reduces fraying at the cut edge of woven fabric. Many sewers keep fabric shears strictly for fabric, since cutting paper or other materials with them dulls the fine edge quickly.

Smaller embroidery or snip scissors, with short pointed blades, are used for trimming threads and reaching into tight corners of a project rather than for cutting large pieces of material.

05

Choosing between these tools

For detailed, small scale cutting such as trimming shapes from paper or card, a craft knife with a sharp point gives the most control. For repeated straight cuts on paper or light card, a trimmer or guillotine is faster and more consistent. For fabric, a rotary cutter paired with a ruler and mat suits long straight or gently curved lines, while shears remain useful for cutting around a paper pattern pinned to fabric or for shapes that do not follow a straight edge.

06

Care tips

Rotary blades and craft knife blades both benefit from regular replacement rather than attempts at sharpening, since their thin edges are designed to be swapped out once dull. Fabric shears, by contrast, can usually be professionally sharpened several times before they need replacing. Keeping a cutting mat under rotary blades and trimmers protects both the blade edge and the work surface, extending the useful life of the tool.
